Andrew Bryant — Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in Truro

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and teacher based in Truro, Cornwall. I work with individuals and couples in private practice, and also offer clinical supervision to psychotherapists, counsellors and trainees.

My approach is psychoanalytic. This means I am interested in how present difficulties may be shaped by unconscious patterns, earlier experiences, relationships, language, fantasy, loss and repetition. I do not work from a fixed programme or set of techniques. Instead, I aim to provide a careful and confidential space in which it becomes possible to speak, think and listen differently.

People often come to therapy because something has become painful, confusing or difficult to bear. Sometimes this is linked to anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, grief, crisis or major life changes. At other times, the difficulty may be harder to name: a sense of being stuck, disconnected, dissatisfied, or caught in patterns that keep returning.

My work is based on the belief that therapy is not simply about removing symptoms, but about understanding something of what they may mean. This kind of work can take time. It can be challenging, but it can also make possible a deeper and more lasting change in how a person relates to themselves, to others and to their own history.

Training and professional background

I trained at the Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis and have worked in private practice for over ten years.

I am a founding member of the Society for Social and Critical Psychoanalysis, where I have held a number of roles, including Chair of Council, Training Committee member, tutor, supervisor and teacher. I also co-coordinate the SSCP Low Cost Clinic in Cornwall.

The Society for Social and Critical Psychoanalysis offers a UKCP-accredited psychoanalytic training in Truro. I am a member of SSCP and work within its psychoanalytic, ethical and clinical culture.

I am not currently registered with UKCP. This is an active professional decision. My training and experience remain within the field of UKCP-accredited psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and I continue to undertake regular clinical supervision and continuing professional development.

Clinical interests

I work with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship problems, sexuality, bereavement, shame, anger, creative inhibition, crisis, and questions of identity or direction.

I am particularly interested in the ways people become caught in repeated patterns: in relationships, work, family life, love, loss and self-understanding. Psychoanalytic therapy offers a way of attending to these repetitions, not as problems to be quickly corrected, but as meaningful formations that may need to be spoken about and understood.

Alongside my clinical practice, I have a background in art, teaching and critical theory. These interests inform my wider thinking about subjectivity, culture, language and the social conditions in which psychological suffering takes shape.

My practice

I work from a private and confidential setting in Truro, within walking distance of the city centre and railway station.

I offer individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy, couples therapy and clinical supervision. Some lower-fee places may be available, and I can offer online sessions where appropriate.
